It’s the turn of the century and four women are drawn together by impending tragedy. Agnes is terminally ill and confined to bed. Her sisters and servant gather at her bedside but jealousy, resentment and selfishness come before sympathy. Unable to communicate meaningfully with Agnes or each other, the sisters leave Agnes’ emotional care to her devoted maid.As the film progresses we are drawn into the memories of each woman in turn…Agnes recalls with regret the emotional separation that existed between her long-dead mother and herself, Sister Maria recalls an act of adultery that poisoned her marriage, while Sister Karin recalls an act of self-mutilation designed to thwart her husband’s desires. Only the maid Anna actually works to comfort Agnes in her final days.
